Thank you for your interest in working in Skagway this coming summer. Below is a detailed description of the positions advertised At the White House B&B. If you are interested in one of the positions, please complete the application, even if you sent a resume. I hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks, Jan
The house is managed by Chelsey and she works four days a week (4/10s) approximately 5:30am to 4:30pm with an hour lunch.
Position One: I am seeking to hire a second person to fill out the other three days a week for this position. This position includes setting up and hosting breakfast, checking guests in and out, answering the phone, some computer work and limited baking.
Positions Two and Three: I am also looking to hire two housekeeping/guest services positions to cover the housecleaning, and afternoon/evening check-ins and reception work. This position may include light yard work if interested, as well as limited baking.
At this time, I am flexible in how the positions are filled and the hours worked. As I fill the positions, there is less flexibility. I foresee the breakfast position working three 10-hour shifts, and the two housekeeping positions being split between two people. There is little to no overtime. During the month of May, hours are lighter because business is. Ideally positions are staffed from early to mid-May (earlier is optional, but work is light) into late September. If you are unable to work these dates, please do not apply.
More about At the White House B&B: At the White House B&B offers nine guest rooms, a public restroom, parlor area, lobby, dining room and a semi-commercial kitchen. Seven rooms are upstairs and there is no elevator. One must be comfortable trekking up and down stairs several times a day, often with guest luggage or a load of laundry. The ability to carry 50 lbs upstairs is a job requirement.
There are 15 beds and 10 bathrooms that need to be cleaned daily. It is a very labor-intensive position and just because you keep a clean house does not equate to the physical requirements of servicing nine bedrooms/ bathrooms daily. The B&B isn’t fancy or luxurious.
Our primary goal is to provide our guests a place to sleep that is comfortable, welcoming and clean.
The expectation, after a reasonable period of training, would be for the housekeeper to be able to service all nine rooms with little or no assistance, in five hours or less. During this time, laundry should be rotated and delivered to where it needs to be. The remainder of the shift tasks include finishing laundry, servicing the public areas, and a limited amount of work in the kitchen.
The Housekeeping position will periodically also answer the phone while working. Phone coverage responsibilities include, but are certainly not limited to reservations, check-ins, check-outs, aiding guests with their bags, and making arrangements for transfers and baggage storage.
Whoever works the breakfast shift will be starting at approximately 5:30am, putting out the buffet and preparing muffins and baking cookies. A lot of experience is not necessary, but if you aren’t a morning person or you don’t like the kitchen, this is not the position for you.
If either position sounds like something you are qualified for and are interested in, I invite you to complete the application and forward it to me, via scanned email, or mail at your earliest convenience.
Typically, wages start at $12/hour with an end of season bonus based on the number of hours worked, generally $2-$4 per hour. Housing is optional.
Thank you for considering us At the White House as a part of your summer 2019 experience.
